I was a child who strove for perfection and agoniz

I was a child who strove for perfection and agonized over my shortcomings.

My earliest memory of this was in fourth grade. I had a homework assignment I struggled with and instead of handing it in my incomplete assignment or asking for help, I went into the cloakroom. And when no one was there, I shoved my duo-tang underneath some old boxes of Christmas decorations - it was easier hide my lack of understanding than to face it.

Those my mindset worked against me for a while - there are simple but powerful startegies to turn a child's mistakes into opportunities for growth.

1. Approach the set back with curiosity. Instead of being upset or disappointed, ask what happened? Did your student not understand or not have enough practice?

This will help you formulate your plan.

2. Use the power of yet to reframe mistakes.

If your child says she doesn't understand or hadn't studied enough simply adding the word *yet* can promote a growth mindset and better academic performance.

3. Work together and get creative.
For example add play money to work on math or turn study material in a song.

4. Praise effort instead of results.

Research on growth mindset shows that parents and teachers who praised students' work ethic had students who did better in school!

This is such a great analogy. All of us bear burdens. Some of us have more support than others. Others may be fighting battles we know nothing about. And as a result, their overreaction to something minor is because something huge is weighing on them we know nothing about.

This is a great reminder to always assume the best of others and to be kind.

I can’t say I catch the moment in between as muc

I can’t say I catch the moment in between as much as I’d like but I continue to do better.

There is such grace in this quote
“Between stimule and response there is a space.

In that space is our power to choose our response.

In our response lies our growth and our freedom.”

It means I’m not tied to my overreactions. The hope for the future lies in the in the space in between.🙏🙏🙏
