Hi! I'm Alana. When I'm not nursing cold, stale coffee, I usually can be found with the baby on my hip, barefoot, and racing after my two older kids. Thanks to a degree in psychology and a free-range childhood backing onto an expansive evergreen forest, positive parenting and play-based learning are my passions. Read more here.

Well today was one of those days in the weirdest w Well today was one of those days in the weirdest ways possible.

First, I was a server error preventing me from doing work for the university I attend.

Then, I lost important coding for a research project... and cried.

I had planned on staying logged off social media all day but needed to reach out to a colleague when I saw a message from my virtual assistant pointing to a big problem. There was a post on my Facebook page that had absolutely no place being shared anywhere.

Shaking, I logged onto my business account, deleted the video and issued an apology.

What came next proved just how wonderful the community of people who surround me truly are.

Swipe to see just some of the wonderful commentary I received.

(Note part of the reason I’m sharing this here is that I cannot guarantee that everyone who saw the egregious post saw the apology and so I want to share it elsewhere).

Thank you to all of you for your grace, suspended judgment and kindness. - Alana
Words to live by and yet I don't. "If your compas Words to live by and yet I don't.
"If your compassion does not include yourself then it's incomplete."
I chose the image to represent this quote because of all the juggling primary caregivers do. A child on my lap as I work is pretty standard. I push myself and have unreasonable expectations of myself. And when I falter, instead of talking to myself as I would a loved one (and the way I would like my kids to talk to *themselves* when they fall short), I beat myself up, dwell on my ineptitudes and push myself even harder.
I came across this quote and I felt perhaps there were many out there that needed the reminder to give ourselves a bit more grace, a bit more love and a whole lot more self-compassion.
Especially during times where our laps are as busy as our to-do lists.

There are some things that feel extra special sinc There are some things that feel extra special since COVID and any day one-on-one with any of my kids is just that. They’re fewer and farther between.

This day was ever the more special because it was marked by my son receiving the sacrament of penance followed with a mother-son lunch.

What are you especially grateful for during this crazy time?

It’s so rare I get a photo with all three of my It’s so rare I get a photo with all three of my babes and even still it isn’t picture perfect but I’ll take it.

When I scroll through my phone and look at my Facebook memories I realize that probably 99% of the time it’s me taking the picture, and it isn’t a selfie.

So here’s to both making more memories with all my kiddos and taking more photos of us together.
